Today's route, like Gaul, was divided into three parts: the first 30km predominantly uphill, the next 30km predominantly downhill, and the last 50km predominantly flat along the river Elbe bike path. Astute readers (who have read my write-up of yesterday’s ride) will note that I professed to hate bike paths following "great rivers". Super-astute readers (who are good at arithmetic) will note that those numbers don't add up to the overall distance of this ride. Both of these points will be elaborated as you read on!

It was Sunday, the second half of my weekend ride from Prague to Dresden. Hradek nad Nisou, the small Czech town where I had stopped for the night, showed a completely different aspect in the crisp morning sunshine than it had in the dark and rain when I arrived. There was no sign of the eponymous "Hrad" (castle), though.* I traversed the old town centre for a few photos and also made an immediate change to my layers, as I'd wrapped up warmly against the forecast of 4°C, but could tell straight away that I was going to get much too hot in the sunshine.
[* I missed a trick, because it turns out that there is indeed a very fine and well-preserved castle, Hrad Grabstejn, only about 2.5km away, which I would definitely have included on my route if I had known!]

From the legend on a monument in the square, I discovered that the town once rejoiced in the German name "Grottau". This was the region populated by the infamous Sudetendeutsch, used by Hitler as a pretext for his invasion of Czechoslovakia. The German-speaking population was expelled after the end of WW2, which seems harsh but understandable. It's good to see that the healing of time has allowed the German inscription to be reinstated on the monument, at least.

My ride began by heading due north for a short distance to the triple border point where Czechia, Poland and Germany converge. It was such a short distance, in fact, that I overshot, and only realised my mistake when I came to the border sign announcing Germany at the bridge over the river Neisse - its Czech name is "Nisa", the town name Hradek nad Nisou meaning "castle on the Nisa". The border crossings here were so frictionless, indeed, that I hadn't even realised that I had left Czechia and been cycling through Poland for the last couple of kilometres. I backtracked to the triple point by following the dyke beside the Neisse on the Polish side. The overshoot and backtrack added 5km or so to my planned route, explaining the arithmetical discrepancy.

I went full circle and rejoined my original route, really crossing the Neisse this time into Germany at Zittau, where I turned westwards towards the low mountains of so-called "Bohemian Switzerland" which divide the Neisse from the Elbe. I was keen to find a bakery to augment the inadequate breakfast at the B&B, but was also keen to wait until I recrossed into Czechia so that I could spend some of my surplus Czech currency. After another hour or so, I couldn't wait any longer, and stopped to refuel on a muesli bar and a couple of caffeine tablets.
Although steadily climbing, the gradients were very moderate (I'd estimate mostly sub-5% and never in excess of 7-8%), the roads mostly free of traffic and the weather clear and sunny. Looking behind me, I could see the plume of a power station rising vertically into the still air.

Unlike yesterday, I had plenty of time to complete today's ride, so I didn't have to push myself at all and was able to enjoy the scenery, stop for as many photos as I liked, and I'd even planned for a sit-down lunch in a well-reviewed restaurant to savour some genuine Czech cuisine and use up some of that currency. The crossing from Germany back into Czechia was accomplished exactly 2 hours after setting off, and was equally frictionless as the others, marked only by a white line and some boulders partially blocking the bike path.

From there, it wasn't long until I reached the highest point of the ride (photo at the top of this article), and that's when the fun really began in earnest. Spectacular views over autumn-tinged mountain forests, near-deserted roads twisting through secretive valleys with steep craggy cliffs, bright sunshine slanting through the gaps between the trees. I was grinning from ear to ear while riding along, or, more often than not, stopping to admire the views and take lots of photos. It's definitely a ride I would love to repeat!

I'd predicted reaching my lunch stop at 13.30, and by either luck or good planning, that was precisely the time I rolled into the car park at the Hotel Mezní Louka, which was at the top of the last mini-summit before descending to the Elbe. Having missed out on proper Czech cuisine yesterday, it was time to indulge myself. I sat down at a table in the sunshine on the terrace and ordered duck confit with red cabbage and dumplings. A glass of wine to accompany it, or cider, was a tempting idea, but alcohol was best left until I'd finished the ride; so I ordered "Apfelschorle" (apple juice mixed with sparkling water) as a good rehydration/energy mix, and followed up with a double espresso. I skipped dessert, promising myself an ice cream treat once I got to Dresden, instead.

After the lunch stop, although distance-wise I was not even halfway to my destination (55km done, 60km to go), it was almost literally downhill all the way: beginning with a short, steep descent to the river Elbe at Hrensko, then following the Elbe downstream to Dresden. There was severe fire damage to the forest along this initial descent; reading old news reports online afterwards, I found out that there had been a forest fire lasting 2 weeks in August of this year, during which the inhabitants of both Hrensko (at the bottom) and Mezní Louka (at the top) had to be evacuated, and firefighting aircraft had been brought in from as far away as Italy!

Hrensko, the little border town beside the Elbe, had all the hallmarks of a tourist honeypot, with cafés, hotels, souvenir and craft shops, and endless rows of street market stalls selling all kinds of merchandise, presumably catering to a clientele of Germans crossing the border in search of bargains at Czech prices.

The route plan suggested by Komoot had a ferry crossing here to the German west bank, where I could join the Elbe bike path. Sure enough, two boats were moored up to a landing stage, although I was initially put off by the precipitous metal steps down from the road, and a "no bicycles" sign.

I was still dithering at the top of the steps when the outer boat peeled off and set sail down river towards Bad Schandau, the German border town some 8km away; once it was no longer shading the interior of the other boat, I could see that there were in fact several bicycles aboard already, so I quickly grabbed mine and lifted it down the steps to join them; thank goodness for a light bike! I'd made up my mind just in time, because as soon as I had boarded, the ferryman closed the gate, collected my €2.50 fare, and set off on the very short crossing. The alternative for me would have been to take the rather busy main road on the Czech side to Bad Schandau, where there is a bridge, but I was glad to have caught the ferry, which avoided the traffic and was great fun too!

So, time to see how I would cope with the 50km slog along the Elbe bike path! There was actually some method to my madness in this route planning. For one thing, the first 30km went through the stunning scenery of the Elbe Gorge, between massive sandstone cliffs topped here and there by imposing castles; not at all the bland, flat riverside dykes which I find so tedious. For another, with the downhill trend and easy riding conditions, the riverside path put me in a good position to hurry up into Dresden if I had found myself behind schedule for catching my train.

Stunning scenery notwithstanding, it took all of 7.5km (I checked on my tracker!) before I found myself thinking "how much more of this stuff do I have to do?!" It's really not my kind of cycling. There was only one thing for it, and that was to go faster and get it over with - except when stopping for photos, or slowing down for "traffic", of which there was plenty, especially in the tourist-crammed towns and villages along the way.

I reached Dresden a full hour and a half before my homeward train departure, and located a lovely ice cream café in the Altstadt 20 minutes before it closed, to get the promised treat - and another double espresso.
