Autumn Trail Series 2020 Race One

The Sunday before last, I took part in something new that was guaranteed not to result in a PB. My first ever trail race.

This was part of a series that originally was going to be a one-off as the first run of the Trail Monkey Autumn Trail Series. As a result of the cancellations of the Poppy Half and Great South Run my diary had opened up rather and I decided, on something of a whim, to do the rest of the series. Anyway, this first event started and finished around Corbiere.

The weather did not look very clever. It was dry but very windy indeed which I wondered if it would be interesting along the cliff paths.

The trip to the event was easy and the build up was relaxed. Aside from the weather. That did not promote calmness or relaxation in any way. For this event, and for the first time in ages, I decided to run with music and I have to say, for a race, it added to the experience hugely although that could be because I'd picked some huge tunes to enjoy.

The opening section of the race was enjoyable. I went off towards the back of a leading group but quickly let them go and settled into a reasonable mid-pack position. I felt confident on the rocky paths and enjoyed the run down to the sea.

That there was an expected, tough section - a climb / scramble up a gravelly, rocky, loose cliff side with a vague path sort of on it. I took it carefully, didn't hold anyone up and didn't plummet off the side of the cliff. That's a win I'd say.

That's life threatening oblivion, off to the left there...

It was strength sapping stuff. I had a little walk at the top of the climb and rested before the next effort towards and past the Desalination Plant.

The steps climb after that was a good excuse for another walk, knowing that the majority of the rest of the race was flat. There was a bit of a course marking mix up or two in the next section, sending one person in the wrong direction instead of turning back away from the prison, and just after that the person I was running behind missed the next turn sign.

Fortunately, having run this route recently I knew the rest of the way around this section.

I should add here I did go wrong much later on another unmarked section but I think I ran the same distance as everyone else, especially the one person who followed me down the same wrong turn.

Then it was back towards the Desalination Plant after a steep but short downhill section, with the gravelly part of that making me lose a little confidence in my footing. The climb up the rail track took a lot out of me so I had another walk then and one more after nearer the finish.

The actual finish was mainly downhill but a bit too steep and I was a bit too tired to really enjoy it but I had something left for a bit of pace.

In the end I was really satisfied with my time and finishing position - 14th out of 27. I was expecting to finish much more towards the back of the field so I was happy.

The next event is two weeks away and is another one I've practised the course on but, as a result, I know it's going to be tough!
